Working on a AAA game may be your lifelong dream – and it is not an impossible one at all. However, you need to get your foot in the door and that requires passion and skill.
Finnish game developer Remedy, responsible for games such as Alan Wake and the upcoming Quantum Break, is one of the leading AAA developers in the Nordic region, now celebrating its twentieth anniversary. We asked Jukka-Pekka Parkkonen from HR at Remedy for his five best pieces of advice for people seeking a job at the studio.
Show in your application that you care about games and Remedy
“We look for people who are passionate about what they do and want to create awesome games with people who share the same feeling. It’s important that passion comes through,” says Parkkonen. “Naturally, it helps if you know the Remedy pedigree and are ready to bring something new to the table.”
Are you the kind of person Remedy absolutely wants to hire?
“Try to tell us in short what a great person you are and why we should hire you,” notes Parkkonen. “Bragging about yourself might prove difficult for some people, but explaining how talented you are will most certainly improve your odds of getting the dream job you always wanted.”

Work on your portfolio and application
“Remember to show your best and latest portfolio, the work samples that make you proud,” adds Parkkonen. “This is one of the best ways to get the job. If you are an outstanding artist, show that in your application and portfolio. In general, we look far more at the cool stuff you have done rather than your academic merits. We look at talent and potential. Remedy has a great variety of people from all walks of life working on our games.”
Tell Remedy about your education and employment history
“If you have studied in a game industry-related school/program, remember to tell about the great things you’ve done during your studies, for example your most outstanding school projects,” continues Parkkonen. “Also remember to include your pastime projects related to the job you’re applying for – even unfinished work can be proof of your awesome skills! If you have already worked in the games industry it would be super cool to clearly see from the application in what companies and in what roles and during which years you have worked. Sometimes this is surprisingly difficult.”
Practice, practice and practice
“Practice your skills like there is no tomorrow, and I guarantee that your chances of getting that job will increase a great deal,” concludes Parkkonen.
