Newly established Stockholm-based Snowprint Studios, founded by industry heavyweights from King, Rovio, DICE, Unity and Zynga, is a mobile free-to-play games developer focused on accessible mid-core games for a wider audience of players.
Leading the company is CEO and co-founder Alexander Ekvall, ex-director of product at King. Ekvall is joined by more than a dozen designers, artists and industry professionals with experience from a wide range of top tier companies, working on some of the world’s most prominent games. Former leads from DICE, Rovio, King and Zynga make up the company’s core team.
Snowprint Studios has also completed an initial seed round of funding led by Jari Ovaskainen, past CEO of IObox and early investor in Supercell. Snowprint’s initial advisors include Wooga head of studio Wilhelm Österberg, I/O Ventures managing partner Paul Bragiel and Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen.
“We saw a significant opportunity for innovation in gameplay and presentation that could make mid-core games more accessible,” says Snowprint Studios CEO and co-founder Alexander Ekvall. “Traditional gamers are now finding themselves with a powerful gaming platform in their pockets, while casual and mid-core players are beginning to move beyond mobile’s simpler offerings. Snowprint Studios’ games will sit at a crossroads between these gamers, inviting every kind of player to explore gameplay with new, challenging and accessible mid-core components.”
Snowprint Studios’ first game will be a new kind of RPG set in the epic realm of Norse mythology. Players will build their own teams as they defend “Middle Earth” from the icy warriors of “Niflheim”, competing in tactical, puzzle-based battles and collecting heroes that can evolve their godlike powers along the way.
“Mid-core genres like RPGs are ripe for opportunity when done right, and Snowprint has the team to take it to the next level,” adds Ekvall. “We’re developing a richer connection between uninterrupted gameplay and long-term commitment, finding a balance that will create a new, deeper layer of games for the masses, while enticing traditional gamers to play more on their phones.”
Further details about the company and upcoming games from Snowprint Studios will be announced in the coming months.
