Nordic Game speaker Ste Curran shares a special message before NG21 May:
It has been six months since my last confession.
Thursday, 13th May, London, England: Ste Curran makes a new appeal for your industry confessions, promising to absolve your guilty conscience once more at NG21 May.
Six months ago I asked you to fill in a form. Six months ago I asked you to tell me your secrets and dozens of you did, spilling hidden regrets and unspoken indiscretions into a beautiful (fictional) ceremonial box I’d made just for the occasion. I opened the box live at Nordic Game 20+ and we let the secrets out, safely, anonymously: I listened, I answered, and you were truly free for the first time since whatever happened… happened.
That was a practice run. Let’s do it again.
And just like last time, you don’t need to be afraid. We’ve all done it, whatever it is. You’re a master of the plausible lie: sorry, you can’t make it, you’re going to the dentist (the pub), you’re doing some biz dev (meeting a games industry friend at the pub), you need some quiet time to solve this very difficult problem (ask Reddit, go to the pub). You bought those placeholder assets from Fiverr and never replaced them. You took the plums from the icebox and the last bit of soya milk from the office fridge. You ripped this mechanic from a Roblox game your kid’s playing, you pretended it came to you in a dream and your boss called you a genius. When you told everyone your NFTs are green you meant it, but only because they are literally green; you’re selling JPGs of green things. You don’t know why anyone’s buying them but that’s the market, isn’t it?
It’s fine. It’s all fine.
Tell me everything. Let it out, whatever it is, minor or major, silly or serious.
What have you got away with? How much of your working from home is sleeping? Does your art director think you’re a rising star when you’re just good at googling “nice palette”? Is your commented code at best abusive, occasionally libellous? Does something work in your game and, well, you don’t really know why? Did you let a class A through just to see if Sony were paying attention (they weren’t)? Did you once confuse Cliffy B with Owen Wilson at an Xbox party and tell him that you thought that Scooby Doo was pretty good, all things considered?
Here’s a form: https://forms.gle/H7davygsofYy2WFs8
Fill it out with your confession – the results are completely anonymous but if you want you can make it more anonymous by using a VPN and wearing a mask. This is your opportunity to share your dark secrets. I’ll read them out during the session then, somehow, just like last time, I will lift the burden and we can all move on.
If this works out Jacob has promised, and he means it this time, to build me an ornate COVID-secure confession booth for when we’re back in Malmö in… November? Let’s hope it’s November.
I can’t wait to forgive you.
Ste.
