Ste Curran: Bless Me, The Games Industry, For I Have Sinned

It has been six months since my last confession.

Wednesday, 27th April, London, England: Ste Curran wants your games industry confessions, promising to absolve your guilty conscience in person at NG22.

COVID gave us isolation and isolation gave us a chance to reinvent ourselves, and so it was that, instead of speaking, I began to listen. Over the last two years I’ve asked for your industry confessions and turned them into my Nordic Game talk, a conference session of absolution where we share secrets, consider what they mean and then forgive.

We’re no longer alone but the secrets remain and later this month we’re going to try this in person. I will share some of my secrets and ask you to forgive me, and you will share some of yours and I’ll read them out and promise, cross-my-heart, that I’ll lift the burden.

The secrets can be little or big, serious or stupid. We all have them and there are lessons everywhere.

So: what have you got away with? What’s the worst thing you’ve done that no-one knows about? What have you seen, how have you cheated, what do you know that they don’t? What do you really think about the company you work for; what do you really want to do; who do you really want to be?

Have you, like, me, hidden two bedrolls behind a cupboard so you could, maybe, theoretically and on two occasions actually, sleep in your office? Have you, like me, lied about completing Ocarina of Time, a game that you haven’t even played? Have you, like me, spent the last seven years writing mean songs about someone’s game because he, as you were talking to a mutual friend at a party, turned to you and sneered “Do you know who I am?”. I mean, probably not, that’s really specific, but I’m sure you have your own stories.

Whatever. Write me a note right now by clicking on this link — and tell me anything you want.

The form is completely anonymous (I don’t see where the messages are from and the only name I see is the pseudonym you choose to use) but if you want you can make it more anonymous by using a VPN and wearing a mask.

This session doesn’t work without your contributions so help me out. You really don’t want this to be an hour of me telling you I secretly don’t like Rez.

I can’t wait to forgive you.

Ste.
