Take four ex-EA/Playfish developers, one award-winning Norwegian children’s book author and a veteran US voice actor playing a record total of twelve amusing roles. Add animated characters, interactive touch points, fun mini-games and the ability for little kids to decide how to shape their narrative and you have Teddy Is Missing! – A Storyshape Adventure, now available internationally in English.
Teddy Is Missing! – A Storyshape Adventure is an interactive storybook and a labor of love for Plus Point, an interactive studio based in Tromsø, Norway. It is also their first original IP, one that is very much inspired by the retro Choose-Your-Own-Adventure series of books that were wildly popular in the 80s – but delivered to a new generation of kids growing up with interactive books.
The team placed emphasis on crafting an original story; a collaborative process that Plus Point established very early on with celebrated Norwegian children’s book writer, Endre Lund Eriksen. Together, the creators set out to imagine a fantastic universe of living toys and an unlikely villain who had kidnapped the titular “Teddy”, leaving the game’s little hero “Theo” to bravely venture forth and rescue his best friend.
“As a parent to young kids myself, I felt like there was a lack of agency in interactive products developed for this age group,” said Plus Point creative director Ismet Bachtiar. “Watching the lively results of the Norwegian launch of the interactive book with an audience of pre-schoolers validated that theory and it was great to see them eager to determine their narrative paths based on the characters we’ve created!”
The international launch of the interactive book features voice-overs provided by Roger L. Jackson, a veteran voice actor who made famous the voice of “Ghostface” from the Scream movies, “Mojo Jojo” from the Power Puff Girls and dozens of game projects.
“Roger is amazingly talented and really showed off his versatility with this project,” added Bachtiar. “More than anything, the humor he adds to the characters were spot on – our sides were aching from laughing during the recording session!”
