Finnish game publisher MyGamez has been selected as a game content provider for China Unicom’s Future Family Fun alliance, to bring Western games to the Chinese operator’s IPTV set-top box platform in China.
China Unicom, the second largest mobile operator in China, officially launched its IPTV set-top box business in October. The company’s Future Family Fun alliance comprises of 40 enterprises, including major home appliance manufacturers like TCL, Konka and ChangHong, as well as content distributors like Gameloft, Chukong and LeTV.
The first title MyGamez is launching in partnership with China Unicom is Tunnel Ground from Finnish game studio Tunnel Ground Oy. Tunnel Ground, a first-person shooter (FPS) game, is based on the cult sci-fi hit cartoon of the same name.
“We are working with all major game distribution channels in China, and are now very excited to enter into this new agreement with China Unicom,” says MyGamez CEO Mikael Leinonen. “We have been working closely with the Tunnel Ground team to localise the game to fit the Chinese market. The game looks great on big TV screens, and we are looking forward to introducing many other great games from Finland and Europe to China Unicom’s customers.”
The IPTV set-top box business is predicted to boom in China. According to the latest data, more than 35 million smart TVs were sold in China during the first three quarters of 2014.
“The growth of mobile games market and the prospects for the TV set-top box business in China for Western game developers are huge,” continues MyGamez VP of developer relations Martti Mustila, who delivered a speech at China Unicom’s launch event, “TV games will be a booming industry in China.”
