In-game development, bringing a specific vision to life often requires a lot of control. A game’s tech stack will be tuned precisely the right way to deliver the optimal player experience. An open source strategy is a way to get the best of both worlds. With open-source, you have access and freedom to modify the technology stack to work the way you need it to, especially if you have an existing tech stack. You don’t have to start from scratch either. Instead, you’ll be able to build upon the learnings of the open-source game community.
While open source doesn’t cost money, it isn’t entirely free. You should (and for some projects, must) give back to the community by contributing back to the project. This can be an excellent benefit for smaller companies and individual game developers, as contributors gain visibility among peers.
Open source projects for games are more than ready for production. From venerable projects like Kubernetes to game-specific projects like Agones (K8 for games) and Open Match (matchmaking), games of all sizes can benefit from open source.
