The Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture has listed the demoscene as a proposed national UNESCO cultural heritage of humanity together with eleven other cultural areas.
According to the Finnish Heritage Agency, “the demoscene is an international community focused on demos, programming, graphics and sound. Since the 1980s, the community has grown to now consist of hundreds of different demo groups across Finland. The subculture is an empowering and important part of identity for its members.”
“The demoscene inspires to create, express and to do. While it revolves around digital devices, at its core demoscene is communal, connecting people and groups across borders,” says Finnish journalist and demoscene veteran Jukka O. Kauppinen. “The inclusion of demoscene on the Finnish list of intangible cultural heritage is an important indication that it is still possible to birth and grow completely new cultures and content.”
