Nordic Game partner Invest in Canada shares a special message in the run-up to NG21 May:
When it comes to the world of gaming, Canada is so much more than moose and maple syrup. Globally, Canada is the third largest video game producer after the U.S. and Japan. With close to 700 gaming studios grinding across the country’s digital playground, it’s no wonder Canadian-based companies keep producing indie to AAA hits like Marvel’s Avengers, FIFA 20, Tunic, Project Winter and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege.
Global companies like EA Games, Gameloft, Ubisoft and WB Games have all set up shop in Canada, building some of the biggest games on the planet.
What’s the draw? With generous financial incentives, R&D tax credits and favourable immigration policies, Canada is a global destination for game developers. The country has a deep digital talent pool with close to 28,000 game developers and growing. Employment grew at a rate of 30% in 2018‒2019. The government’s Global Talent Stream is allowing gaming studios in Canada to fast-track highly-skilled talent into Canada within weeks.
“Canada makes sense for us,” says Ben Mattes, Senior Vice President at Rovio Entertainment, the Helsinki-based producer of the popular Angry Birds game. “In Montreal we have access to world-class talent, not only in game design but also in converging areas like AI, cloud/5G consoles and mobile which helps Rovio stay at the cutting-edge of game development.”
Get a taste of the market and its endless possibilities at Nordic Game 2021. Nearly 30 innovative Canadian studios are on hand and ready to showcase their gaming superpowers.
“Being a part of Canada’s creative and game design ecosystem has accelerated our growth. A west-coast presence in North America has paid dividends in terms of access to clients, talent and new markets”, says Tim Wilson, Managing Director of Atomhawk Design, an award-winning visual development agency with studios in the North East of England and Vancouver.
Watch the Nordic Game 2021 livestream on May 26 and May 27 to learn more about how Rovio and Atomhawk are finding success from building games in Canada.
