By any measure, the Finnish games industry has seen steady annual growth since 2009. Earnings and sector employment also continued to rise last year, though at a lower rate than 2015 – reflecting moderate growth and stabilisation in contrast to the rapid expansion of earlier years.
A shortage of experienced staff has plagued the industry for years, and 2016 was no exception. According to a new report from Neogames Finland, Finnish studios expect to create about 280 new positions this year, but the availability of foreign labour and the slow admission rate to Finland has become one of the largest obstacles to growth.
Currently, around 18 per cent of employees working in the Finnish games industry come from abroad and the figure is likely to rise, as finding talented senior level employees in Finland becomes increasingly difficult.
Despite the growth slow-down in 2016, games from Finnish studios are by far Finland’s largest content export and game development is a significant part of the national economy. Based on preliminary estimates, the games industry’s share of Finnish GDP was about half a percent in 2016, and Finland’s market share in global mobile game earnings is around 7 per cent. In terms of total sales, Finland is among the three largest game development countries in Europe.
“Finnish games, from Angry Birds and Clash of Clans to Quantum Break and Cities: Skylines, have conquered the world,” says Finnish Game Developers’ Association board chairman Mariina Hallikainen. “Well over a billion people around the globe play games made in Finland.”
“The Finnish games industry is confident about the future,” adds Neogames Finland director KooPee Hiltunen. “Success is built piece-by-piece and one game at a time, and Finnish studios are great at making games.”
